Celebrating Excellence: Emma Johnston Named 2025 Research Assistant of the Year

Each year, the Tisch MS Research Center of New York recognizes a member of our Research Assistant cohort for their dedication, curiosity, and commitment to advancing MS research.

This year, we are proud to celebrate Emma Johnston, RA Class of 2026!

Originally from Arlington, Virginia, Emma joined Tisch MSRCNY with a strong desire to connect scientific discovery with human impact. Her passion for translational science began during her undergraduate research on metal regulation in mammalian cells, but it was the collaborative, patient-centered environment at Tisch that solidified her career path.

Working under the mentorship of Dr. Roberto Alfonso and Dr. Saud A. Sadiq, Emma studies the role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in MS pathogenesis. In her time at Tisch, she has developed new technical skills — from flow cytometry and immunoassays to fluorescence microscopy — while also gaining firsthand experience in patient-facing aspects of research, like patient education.

“Through opportunities like obtaining consent during a study and presenting at the patient symposium, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for scientific communication and the human impact of molecular research,” Emma shared.

Emma also credits her scientific interest to the mentorship she’s received throughout her academic and professional journey. Among her many role models are Dr. Teresita Padilla-Benavides, her undergraduate PI; Dr. Dupe Burgess, founder of the women’s healthcare accessibility company Bloomful; and of course, the team at Tisch MSRCNY!

Looking ahead, Emma plans to earn her PhD and study the molecular basis of disease. Outside the lab, Emma enjoys reading, birdwatching, and spending time with friends.

Please join us in congratulating Emma on this well-deserved recognition! Her enthusiasm, skill, and compassion exemplify the values that drive the Tisch MS Research Center’s mission every day.
