Grand Rounds with Dr. Paul Lieberman, Ph.D.

On Wednesday December 10th, Tisch MSRCNY was honored to host Dr. Paul M. Lieberman, Ph.D., for a Grand Rounds session at our Center.

A Grand Rounds session is an educational meeting where new scientific findings, translational research, and clinical advances are presented by subject matter experts to update staff on cutting-edge knowledge in their field.

A time-honored tradition in medicine, these meetings are a key forum for continuing medical education, knowledge sharing, and building relationships with other researchers.

Dr. Lieberman is the Hilary Koprowski Endowed Professor and Program Leader of the Genome Regulation and Cell Signaling Program at The Wistar Institute’s Ellen and Ronald Caplan Cancer Center. He is also the Founding Director of Wistar’s Center for Chemical Biology & Translational Medicine. His research explores how certain viruses — especially Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) and Kaposi’s Sarcoma–associated Herpesvirus (KSHV) — establish long-term latent infections that can later lead to cancer or autoimmune disorders (such as MS).

Dr. Leiberman’s lab is home to 19 researchers and explores fundamental questions about how viruses maintain latency, interact with host cell machinery, and hijack cellular processes. Their latest projects focus on the epigenetic controls of latent viruses and human telomeres, and how interactions between viruses and telomeres may induce a malignant transformation of the infected cell.

At the Center, Dr. Lieberman delivered a lecture on identifying pathogenic EBV+ B-cells in multiple sclerosis and the evidence supporting EBV as a trigger for MS. Tisch MSRCNY’s own EBV specialist, Dr. Roberto Alfonso, was able to discuss our lab’s findings and current virology initiatives with Dr. Lieberman, and we look forward to deepening the relationship between our two institutions.

Thank you, Dr. Lieberman, for generously sharing your time and expertise!
