On Friday, our researchers and physicians discussed a paper comparing the gut microbiome of MS patients to healthy household controls.

Changes in the gut microbiome have been associated with several diseases. The authors of this paper aimed to identify and investigate alterations to the gut microbiota, both compositionally and functionally, that may be associated with MS disease, subtype, severity, treatment, and diet. Their results suggest that specific components of the gut microbiome could potentially be associated with MS risk and stage; however, extensive follow-up studies must be conducted to assess the relevance of these species and pathways in MS.
