July 12, 2019: At Journal Club, our experts sat down to discuss a paper on cellular aging and remyelination in progressive MS.
Nicaise et al 2019 - Cellular senescence in progenitor cells contributes to diminished remyelination potential in progressive multiple sclerosis
Stem cells, particularly neural progenitor cells (NPCs), have been a topic of much current MS research. This research group specifically studied the effect that cell aging has on demyelination and the therapeutic potential of progenitor cells. They determined that cell aging could be the reason it is difficult to achieve remyelination in progressive MS patients. It was determined that a particular compound, rapamycin, could potentially increase remyelination potential. Further research is needed to fully understand the therapeutic possibilities and determine the role of cell aging in other types of MS.
