June 21, 2019: At Journal Club, our experts sat down to discuss a paper on the association of human herpesvirus 6A and MS.

Charvet et al 2018 - Induction of Proinflammatory Multiple Sclerosis-Associated Retrovirus Envelope Protein by Human Herpesvirus-6A and CD46 Receptor Engagement

Human Herpesvirus 6A (HHV-6A) has long been suspected to play a role in the development of MS and other neuroinflammation conditions. HHV-6A normally presents as the common childhood condition, Roseola. This research group wanted to further study the interaction of this virus and MS. Their research supported the idea that viruses may contribute to inflammatory diseases and that a protein that is part of the immune system, CD46, may play an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disease. Further research is needed to fully understand this virus and the therapeutic possibilities associated with it.
